November 4, 2015—For 20 years, the beloved (but largely forgotten) Novato Theater has been dark, sitting forlornly in the middle of downtown Novato. Once an art deco jewel, the building was shut down for safety reasons, and whole generations of theater-goers have grown up in the area without ever setting foot inside. Now, a local group of movie fans, businesspeople, and history aficionados are hard at work raising the estimated five-million dollars required to bring the once beautiful theater back to life. Having raised just under two-million, a number of fundraising avenues are being actively explored, including a crowd-sourcing effort that has just twenty days left to raise a hoped-for total of $50,000 dollars. Will the community rally to bring the Novato Theater back out of he dark? Let’s hope so.
