The San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle has announced the nominees for their 45th Excellence in Theatre Awards. North Bay Companies and artists have received a total of 75 nominations spread out over 19 categories.
Productions that opened in the first quarter of 2020 and the last half of 2021 were eligible for consideration. The Circle has eliminated gender distinction in their performance categories but continues to divide multiple categories by small, medium, and large house sizes.
Leading the pack with a total of 20 nominations is Rohnert Park’s Spreckels Theatre Company. Their premiere production of Galatea received nine nominations, with all four of its performers being recognized in either the Principal or Featured Performance categories. The show was also recognized for its direction, set design, projection design, original script, and in the Entire Production – North Bay category. Other nominated productions include Urinetown: The Musical and Noises Off.
Mill Valley’s Marin Theatre Company received a total of 15 nominations. Their premiere production of Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley received nine nominations with recognition for its costume design, set design, original script, original music, its ensemble, two featured performances, its dialect work, and in the Entire Production – North Bay category. Other recognized productions include Noura and Love.
Napa’s Lucky Penny Productions had three productions recognized with 14 nominations. A Napa Valley Christmas Carol was recognized for its choreography, set design, original music, music direction, principal performance and two featured performances. Multiple nominations were also given to their productions of Five Course Love and Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Other North Bay companies receiving nominations include Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater (5), Ross Valley Players (5), Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre (4), Mountain Play/Ross Valley Players (3), Novato Theater Company (3), Sonoma Arts Live (3), College of Marin Drama (2), and Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse (1).

The San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle plans to announce the Award recipients in a virtual presentation sometime in late April.
The SFBATCC is a private 501(c)(6) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and serving theaters of all types and sizes in the greater region by recognizing excellence and outstanding achievement in the field. Active since 1976, the Circle consists of reviewers covering theatre in all nine Bay Area counties, across various media.
