Left Edge Theatre has announced the cancellation of their 2020/21 season production of Fun Home. The show, originally scheduled to open in January 2021, is now planned for their 2021/22 season and will be replaced with a New Works Festival.
“We came to the conclusion that we could not do Fun Home justice over Zoom or any recorded format”, said Paige Picard, Artistic Associate at Left Edge, “and will be holding off its production until we can safely return to the theatre together.”
In its place, they plan to offer a New Play Festival consisting of new 10-minute plays specifically written for the Zoom format. Left Edge is now accepting submissions with an October 10th deadline. The festival will be produced in January 2021.
Here are the criteria for submissions to the Hindsight 2021 New Play Festival:
• No longer than 10 minutes in run time
Playwrights of the ten works selected for the Festival will receive the following:
• A produced online Zoom production
• A royalty of $100
• A recorded version of the production made available on demand to stream
• 1% gross revenue from streaming sales
• An invitation to submit one full length play to be considered for the Left Edge 2021/22 season. If this new work is produced, there will be a $1500 royalty.
“We see this new short play festival as an incredible opportunity to create theatre designed for the medium we are currently limited to,” said Argo Thompson, Left Edge Artistic Director. “Although Zoom has its flaws, one of its virtues is that it knows no geographical limits or borders. With this new opportunity, we invite playwrights from anywhere to participate.”
