After three weekends of full houses and enthusiastic critical and audience response, Main Stage West has added to additional nights of ‘Outside Mullingar,’ the delightfully offbeat romance from John Patrick Shanley (‘Doubt’). Directed by David Lear, and featuring marvelous performances from Jeremy Anglin, Sharia Pierce, Elly Lichenstein and Clark Miller, the play has inspired strong word of mouth, and a fair number of return visits. Set in modern day Ireland, the play tells the story of two middle-aged neighbors, and their elaborately tangential path toward love.
Sort of.
Critics, including me (click ‘here’ to read my full original review in the North Bay Bohemian) have praised the flowing lyricism of Shanley’s script, the quirky characters and loopy plotting, and primarily the whimsical beauty of the plays’ semi-magical view of love. With just two more shows added, this Friday and Saturday, audiences will have just two final days to see what those reviewers were talking about.
